PC Upgrade for my Brother

January 17th, 2006 · No Comments

Since two weeks ago I am having busy time setting up my smaller brother’s new PC. With RM2,300 (kind of expensive, may get those hardware within RM2,000 in PC Fair), I purchased the following:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice E6 processor
Why buy: The only model available at that time. My brother plays games so Athlon 64 is a better choice based on some reviews.
Comment: This thingy costed me RM560! There’s also shortage in Athlon 64 processor in the market. Can get it around RM460 during PC Fair X(

Corsair ValueSelect DDR400 SDRAM 512MB x 2
Why buy: Recommended by shop dealer. 512MB x 2 (running in dual channel mode) is better than 1GB x 1.
Comment: Can overclock to 480MHz without any issue.

Gigabyte K8NXP-9 motherboard
Why buy: Recommended by shop dealer. Feature rich (e.g. Dual BIOS, 8-channel audio, IEEE 1394b, 2 Gigabit LAN, WiFi Card, Dual Power System (DPS) to provide more stable and constant power to CPU).
Comment: This motherboard is a joke when comes to overclocking. I can only overclock HTT clock from 200 to 210 MHz, and then have to use ClockGen to further overclock it. Suspected is due to limitation on the BIOS (even upgraded to latest F9).

Leadtek Winfast PX6600TD 128MB
Why buy: The only model available at that time. Plan to get 6600 GT but no stock :(
Comment: The GPU and DDR can be overclocked to 390/680 MHz (default 300/550) without any issues. Reviews said it can be further overclocked to 400/720.

Asus TA-55 Casing
Why buy: New model coming to the shop. Reputation of ASUS.
Comment: This casing come with one 8cm rear casing fan. It does not come with power supply. The clipping type of PCI slots is not strong enough to hold device cards, espcially when dealing with on-board USB/Firewire PCI bracket. In front there’s a vending hole but don’t be fooled by the wings there. It’s not a fan and you have to buy your own 8cm fan and install on the front. I purchased a multi-color LED fan and it look nice :D

Acbel E2 Power 340
Why buy: Power supply not bundled with casing. So no choice but have to buy one separately.
Comment: Not much to say about this common thing. Just that it costed me RM155. Kind of expensive for a power supply.

I use existing optical drive, HDD, floopy disk, keyboard, mouse, monitor as the rest of hardware. The most difficult thing for me when setting up this PC is on the casing side.
