One of my friends was having problem when booting her PC. The PC will restart itself after the XP logo screen. I noticed a blue screen appeared in very short period before the system restart. To actually capture the error message, disable “Automatic Restart” (press F8) during system startup.
Refer #8 if you not sure how to do so. The link also contains other useful troubleshooting guides.
It appeared that the error message is regarding UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. Googled and found this link and the solution is working, that is:
1. Insert XP CD during system boot up.
2. Enter “Recovery Console”
3. Type chkdsk /r
4. Type “exit” once disk scan is done.
5. Restart your PC and it should be working fine by now.
The problem is due to a virus call Infostealer spreaded from thumbdrive when my friend inserted it into her PC. To remove the virus, restart in safe mode and run SAV or any other antivirus software to remove it.
