On July/14, I was performing a scheduled medical checkup on liver function. As usually, it takes hours before my name is called so I grab a copy of local newspaper to kill the time. I almost went through whole paper when suddenly I saw an article on “Which major has the most value” written in Chinese. Basically, it says Computer Science degree in US has the highest salary, which is about USD$65,000 (or RM196,000) per annum for the first 5 years. In other words, it is RM16,333 per month, more than 5 times higher than my current salary, and now I am entering 5th year of overall career life!!
As a computer science graduate, I am feeling quite disatisfied with company compensation on degree graduate students in Malaysia. As many colleges and private universities here already having so called “twinning” program with some famous universities out there. Graduated student quality should be considered par with foreign standard, and hence should be pay according to the figure above. Sadly, many employers still treat computer science graduates as “one of the job seekers”. Imagine that how’s your daily operation looks like without computer? How “blog” becomes de facto nowaday without the creative idea of programmers?
Malaysia, major in exporting electronics products, should treat computer science graduate better. Some companies treat Electronics Engineers better than CS. IMHO, hardware and software are mutual dependent. Without software, the product is a piece of scrap metal, so is another around. Both EE and Software Engineers should at least be equally treated. Engineers are not someone you can mess with.
