How a US MNC in Penang treats its engineer

September 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

  • No personal cubicle for engineers. The one you see above is cubicle + lab, that is, degree graduated engineers have to work over there for minimum 8 hours daily.
  • The workplace is actually a cabin made of two 11.96m x 2.51m truck containers.
  • There will be 15 engineers working inside 11.96m x 4.70m container. Their seat is labeled as number on the figure above.
  • Position 1 is the most “strategic” place with most privacy.
  • Position 4 and 6 are the worst place, in which you will be greeted by “Excuse Me” whenever somebody wish to walk through.
  • The floor is made of conductive metal. Do not touch it using your bare hand if you can easily build up static charge on your body.

This is actually a test lab re-layout to squeeze more persons inside to make it a “sardine factory”. Some readers may not agree that this is a bad place to work as some local companies really have this kind of working environment.  Bear in mind that this is a US company which emphasizes on employee’s working environment. Let’s take a look on how’s the test products look like:

Left most monitor is the test server. Bulky laptop on the right is test client. Messy stuff at the center are the test products. At least two tables required to put all those stuff. Definitely there is no more space for personal belonging, including personal laptop. In some companies, the department already received warning letter for not meeting 5S requirement.

A good employee should not criticize on his/her current employer and seek for solution internally first. Somehow, being a cheap slave in the company, we are not given opportunity to take part in making management decision. It is good to bring in more business. At the meantime, managers should ensure there is enough facilities for engineers

If you cannot satisfy engineers, how you going to satisfy customer?
