Hello,
How is your Chinese New Year holiday? Many people returned to work this week. This new year I ate many yee sang, hoping to get a better job and salary
Two of them are in Japanese restaurant, including Sakae Sushi which I am going to review later.
Those living in KL/Penang should familar with this restaurant . So what is the different between Sakae Sushi and Sushi King? The menu is almost identical but the price is slightly cheaper in Sakae Sushi. It is also one of the Sakae Sushi objectives to let more people to enjoy sushi at affordable price. Also, Sakae Sushi use self-ordering system using monitor attached to each table. However, sometime they are not functioning well and we have to order manually. It also has a teppanyaki corner. Its teppanyaki is generally better than the later one.
Let’s talk something special – Yee Sang, an addition during Chinese New Year. Three of us luckily ordered the small version (RM22.80++) which cater for 1-2 persons. It is quite large considering you are ordering other dishes as well. Originated from China, Yee Sang can be seen in Japanese restaurants nowadays.
In Sakae Sushi, there are 3 colors of sushi plate:
Green (RM1.90++)
Pink (RM3.90++)
Red (RM5.90++)
It also has black plate costs at whoppy RM9.90++. The sushi dishes taste good in general. However, some branches do not prepare enough on kaiten during peak period and you have to order it from the system. You can also order sushi set.
Some dishes (e.g. Salmon (Flake) Don (RM9.90++), Seafood Bibinba (RM18.90++)) are quite dried and usually I pour some miso soup inside in order to finish them.
Unfortunately, the ramen is not their specialty and is just average.
The service also can be improved. During peak hour, some items can be missed out. Once I waited 45 minutes for my Teriyaki Chicken Don to arrive.
As a whole, Sakae Sushi provides a better food and price compared to its competitors. The official website is quite informative so you can have a look on their menu.

I had a very unpleasant experience today at the Sakae Sushi in Gurney Plaza, Penang.
Date 23rd April 2009
Time: 1:30pm – 2:00pm
Location: Gurney Plaza, Penang, Malaysia
I decided to have lunch at Sakae restaurant because the shop front looks very modern and the menu is very well designed as well as offering a lot of choice and variety. I was seated at the restaurant at 1:30pm and left at 2:00pm. My order was Hamachi sushi, Unagi rice and tea set (promotional item) and a salmon sushi plus a hot tea once I sat down.
The salmon sushi came first and it was a good start. Then came the second item, it was the hamachi sushi, my favourite. However, the hamachi looked pretty bad, it didnt look a tad bit fresh at all. The colour has gone greyish and it smelt!!! I promptly returned it but was given a rather nasty look by one of the black suited waiters. Then 10 mins later, my unagi rice and tea set came. The unagi and rice was COLD. Worse of all, the tea tasted SALTY!! At first I thought this is some kind of speciality tea. Then I compared with the tea bag I had earlier on, it was the same!!! So I knew right away that my tea has undergone some sort of \”modification\”. A prank should I say. It was totally and utterly a very unprofessional act by the staff and I promptly pointed it out to the manager on duty. I paid the bill and left the restaurant immediately. Worried if there will be another prank thrown at me.
Absolutely an unacceptable service and act from a restaurant in Penang. I hope this will draw their attention to the issue. Regret to send this feedback here. I just hope that it will not happen to any of my friends or families and public in Penang.
A feedback has also been sent to the Management.

Hi Chan,
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I myself also experienced different kind of food quality in different Sakae Sushi branch. In one of the branches in Penang main land, the food quality is poorer and there are only few sushi on the kaiten even it is holiday. They look more like leftover for me. Service quality also different from branch to branch.
Usually I just ordered green tea from teabag. Looks safer for me. :p

I went to sakae gurney on the first day of opening. Since it is the first day, i expect their food to be fresh, i mean not stored in the fridge for days. I am very disappointed with sushi there. Not tasty and the salmons is not fresh.
